Every business that relies on equipment (often in remote or inhospitable environments) knows the challenge: sensors produce oceans of numbers, devices spit out cryptic logs, and your teams are left piecing it together under pressure. Conceptual Architecture
Putting my imagination cap on I imagine an architecture for the combination of ML and TLMs for resource constrained environments. This conceptual architecture shows how machine learning (ML) and tiny language models (TLMs) can work together to make sense of both numbers and text from connected devices. Sensors generate two streams of data: telemetry (e.g., temperature, vibration, current, RPM) and logs (often semi-structured text). Telemetry is processed to extract features and sent to an ML anomaly detector, which is optimised for spotting unusual patterns in numerical data. Logs, meanwhile, are ingested into a messaging system such as MQTT, RabbitMQ or Kafka, enabling TLMs to subscribe and process them in real time.
On the analytics side, fine-tuned TLMs like Gemma 3 270M parse system logs surfacing contextual insights. Rather than replacing ML, they complement it by providing the “why” to ML’s “what.” A correlation layer merges numeric anomalies with log-derived insights, so the system can explain events more clearly, for example, not just flagging a vibration spike but also linking it to log messages about repeated fan restarts or misalignment.
The combined outputs – ML alerts plus TLM explanations—are presented to operators in a human-readable form. Operators can also ask natural language questions such as “What happened before the last failure?” or “Show me anomalies related to pump motors in the past week.” The TLM queries both the ML results and log data to generate clear, actionable responses. The result is an architecture that blends the efficiency of ML, the contextual reasoning of TLMs, and the conversational power of NLP, reducing downtime, cutting costs, and improving operator efficiency.
