I wrote about Deep research models back in February and since then I have been actively integrating them into my business processes (both ChatGPT and Gemini version) and I thought the subject was worth revisiting in more depth. For me they have made a huge difference in everything from developing strategic plans to pre-meeting research.
In a world where information overload is the norm, Deep Research AI models are emerging as a serious productivity improvement tool. These aren’t the average ‘chatbot’ – they’re intelligent research agents that plan, search, analyze, and deliver expert-level insights in minutes. Whether you’re a marketer, strategist, or executive, these tools can transform how you make decisions.
What is it?
Deep Research models – like ChatGPT’s Deep Research, Google Gemini’s Deep Research, and Microsoft Copilot’s Researcher are advanced AI tools designed to perform comprehensive, multi-step research tasks. Unlike traditional GenAI chatbots that provide quick answers, these models:
- Break down complex questions into smaller tasks and plan a research strategy. (Which you can watch as the models develop and work through the plan.)
- Autonomously browse the web (and sometimes internal company data) to gather real-time information. (Sometimes 100’s of websites.)
- Analyse and synthesise findings using advanced reasoning models.
- Deliver structured reports with citations, summaries, and even charts or tables.
Think of them as digital research analysts – capable of doing in minutes what might take a human hours or even days.
What does it mean from a business perspective?
For business users, especially those without technical backgrounds, Deep Research models offer game-changing advantages:
- Save Time & Resources: Condense hours (or days of effort and weeks of duration) of manual research into a few minutes. In my experience, days of effort over weeks, compressed into 1-2 hours (including reviewing the output).
- Expert-Level Insights: Receive detailed, well-organised reports with credible sources you can verify.
- No Technical Skills Required: Just ask your question in plain language.
- More Confident Decision-Making: Get timely, data and source backed insights for planning and action – actionable insights, faster.
- Customisable Outputs: Tailor the format, focus, and depth of the report to your needs.
- Internal + External Data Integration: Tools like Microsoft Copilot can pull from your company’s documents and emails for even more relevant insights.
- Consistency & Thoroughness: AI doesn’t get tired – it checks multiple sources and provides a more balanced view.
- Adds both Capability and Capacity: You get research capacity (and capability) previously reserved for well-staffed teams.
What do I do with it?
Here’s how to make the most of Deep Research models:
- Pick the Right Problem: Choose a research task that’s currently on your to-do list – maybe competitive analysis for next quarter’s planning or market research for a product idea. Use a real business need as your training ground.
- Develop a Clear Prompt: Prompt design is always important – include context, key questions, and preferred format. The more specific, the better. (Make sure you save the good prompts and re-use the format and design.)
- Use the Right Mode: Make sure you activate the Deep Research or Researcher mode in your AI tool.
- Be Patient: These models take 5–30 minutes to deliver results and it is worth the wait.
- Review and Verify: Use the citations to double-check facts or explore further – not to necessarily question the response but to understand the source quality (and sometimes reveal additional insights – it has happened to me!)
- Iterate as Needed: Ask follow-up questions or request deeper dives into specific areas.
- Incorporate into Workflows: Use these tools for market research, competitive analysis, due diligence, or even internal reporting.
Deep Research models are not just another AI trend – they are a practical, powerful tool for modern professionals – they help you deal with the “I wish I had more time to dig into this properly” question. They democratise access to high-quality research, enabling anyone to make smarter, faster decisions. If you haven’t tried one yet, now’s the time to explore how they can elevate your work – try one today (or get in touch to discuss – always happy to collaborate).
