What is it?
No surprise – it’s a (‘it’ in this case being the deployment of AI from a corporate perspective) a challenge and an opportunity. From the Artificial Intelligence perspective, businesses have access to a variety of tools and frameworks designed to facilitate AI adoption. Industry leaders like Gartner and Slalom provide processes for identifying AI opportunities; ISO – International Organization for Standardization ISO42001 is available for defining and assessing an AI management system, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) AI Risk Management Framework (RMF) for managing AI-related risks.
There are established frameworks like Business Architecture Guild BIZBOK for identifying business capabilities, ISACA COBIT 2019 for IT governance, and CMMI models for assessing maturity. However, these resources often operate in silos, focusing on specific aspects of AI without integrating into a comprehensive strategy (with the potential to help with looming legislation).
What does it mean from a business perspective?
From a business perspective, this fragmentation presents a significant challenge. Each framework offers valuable insights and methodologies; their isolated application can lead to gaps in the overall AI strategy. The lack of a holistic approach means businesses might miss out on fully leveraging AI’s potential and the path forward, as they struggle to see the complete picture of their AI implementation.
A thorough approach that combines opportunity identification, risk management, deployment & management strategies, and maturity assessments would enable organisations to align their AI initiatives with strategic objectives, ensuring a more cohesive and effective AI adoption process.
What do I do with it?
To address this challenge, businesses need to integrate these existing frameworks into a unified strategy. Start by identifying AI opportunities using Gartner’s and Slalom’s methodologies along with BIZBOK industry reference models. Manage risks through the NIST RMF and govern the entire system using ISO42001, COBIT and CMMI models. This integrated approach will help ensure all aspects of AI deployment are aligned and managed effectively.
Begin by assessing your current AI strategy and consider how these frameworks can be harmonised to achieve a more comprehensive AI deployment. By combining these elements, businesses can unlock and manage AI’s full potential, ensuring their AI initiatives are not only successful but also sustainable and aligned with long-term goals.
